Is Ultium complete Nutrition a good horse food, to help my horse gain weight?
I just got him and he is under weight….. Ultium is the best food my feed store carries so I got some. Is this a good food??
He is not to bad under weight… his ribs poke out a little… I just feel he looks poor compared to my other horse.
I love the stuff… we used it to put weight on a very thin, hard keeping, OTTB gelding a few years back. It did wonders not only for his weight, but for his coat and general over all health. Also suggested was Corn Oil… start out slow and work up to 1/2-1 cup per day, depending on the horse.
As with any ‘complete feed’, it is designed to feed in very large amounts, usually 1-2% of the horse’s body weight. Which averages anywhere from 5 to 15 lbs per day. Make sure you fully read and understand the directions on the bag and talk with a vet or nutritionist to be sure you’re feeding the right amounts.
Also, horses need lots of foliage, so if possible give him free choice grass hay and supplement with alfalfa, if needed. Most grass hays provide enough nutrients, but the alfalfa will add protein. And, make sure he’s getting lots of natural exersize, like pasture turn out or free time in a paddock where he can wander and build muscle naturally.
